How to Stop Touching your Face We’ve spoken about it before, but this is something that can be ‘touched on’ many times (see what we did there?). We’re all guilty of this at one point or another. Touching, picking, scratching, rubbing, you name it! We all touch our faces but the real question is… How can we stop? In order for our skin to look and feel its absolute best, it’s important to remember that constant touching of the face is a huge irritant. Sometimes we can’t help it, other times we are focussed on an imperfection and try to fix it. What we don’t take into account most times is the fact that touching almost always makes things worse. Every day, your hands come in contact with so many forms of bacteria and when you touch your face, you are effectively transferring these onto your face in an instant. This can lead to dirtier, clogged pores and the excess oil that results from this can, unfortunately, cause breakouts! So while we know this is a bad habit that sometimes cannot be helped, how do we mitigate the issue? Well, most scientists and dermatologists recommend the best step as ‘realization’. If we realize or notice that we are in the middle of the act, we will eventually come to an understanding that we should stop. If simple awareness may not help you or you like to fidget, then perhaps try replacing that form of behavior with another action. Chew some gum, play with your pen, grab a toothpick, etc. Substitution is an effective method in order to trick your mind into focussing on something else. Other times you may experience an imperfection or a pimple, which may provoke picking or scratching. This act is way more severe for the skin since the protective barrier on the skin’s surface can get damaged. You risk more bacteria getting into deeper layers of the skin, as well as scarring on the skin. Some effective countermeasures would be to make sure you clean your hands throughout the day. Keep hand sanitizers and moisturizers with you when you’re on the go. If you feel the need to touch your face, why not add some moisturizer to it? Counteract the bad with some good and apply a hydrating lotion or moisturizing retinol cream.
